Teaching a child communication can begin at birth as a child listens to the tone and inflection of voices. Communication in the child then matures toward gesturing in response to words, and then the beginnings of verbalization. It continues to progress throughout childhood and can be taught through modeling language via directions, explanations, or even conveying the start or end of an activity, such as play time.
